Happy Birthday, Joseph Merrick

Today is the 159th birthday of Joseph Merrick, also known as the Elephant Man. No, he is not a fictional character; he is real, or was real. He was born in England with a rare physical disorder that still perplexes experts to this day of what caused his deformity.

It was unfortunate he died before modern science could save his life. Though he led a short life, Merrick's legacy lives on. You can see the 1980 movie about him, which was directed by David Lynch and stars John Hurt as Merrick.
