Happy 22nd Anniversary, Daikatana

Happy 22nd Anniversary to the infamous Daikatana, the brainchild of John Romero, best known for his work in Wolfenstein, DOOM and Quake. It was overly hyped from the get-go and after its release on May 22nd, 2000, it received negative reviews due to outdated graphics, poor AI and bad controls.

Despite the criticism, I personally enjoyed the game for its interesting plot, cyberpunk aesthetics and cool soundtrack (I’m still waiting for a Spotify release). It may not be GOTY but it was decent. Since then, Romero has never touched First-Person Shooters and has spent most of his time talking about the glory days of id Software over and over again.

This fan art/post is by no means to insult John Romero but to encourage him to go back to making FPS games again. Area-51 and SIGIL don’t count. I’d play to see him make a spiritual successor to DOOM or Quake. Also, what happened to Darkroom? Revive that, please.

In the meantime, here’s to the forgotten heroes of Daikatana: Hiro Miyamoto, Superfly Johnson, and Mikiko Ebihara.
